Black History Month, day 27

Few may know that Jaki Nett is the only African American teacher and faculty member of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco (IYISF). Fewer will know that Jaki is a resident of St. Helena, California, and teaches public classes at IYISF and at her own studio — Iyengar Yoga Napa Valley. She teaches classess and leads workshops nationally and internationally, specializes on female issues, and has written numerous books and articles on the subject of psychology and yoga.

Jaki Nett, faculty member of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco teaching students at her workshop.

Jaki Nett, a 68-year-old Iyengar instructor and former Playboy bunny, says yoga at first was a path to salvation. “It gave me an escape from my wild life,” she says with characteristic bluntness. Over the decades, it has sustained and enriched the trailblazing practitioner through marital strife, illness, menopause, weight gain, and, now more than ever, the process of aging. Today, Nett is grateful for her practice and feels quite comfortable in her own skin. (Adapted from: Anne O’Brien and Grace Rubenstein for YogaJournal, anonymous.)

For more on Jaki read, “A Conversation with Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher Jaki Nett,” by an anonymous writer.
